Title Outdoor Lighting and LEDs (AIA course #GELAIA16VE)

Presenter: Shelli Sedlak, LC, LEED AP®, SMIEEE, Manager, The Institute, Current, powered by GE

Speaker Bio

When:   9am - Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Where:   Room 305

Abstract (Synopsis):

Outdoor lighting has recently experienced significant changes.  The advancements of LED technology and controls, and code introductions such as the Model Lighting Ordinance (MLO), have prompted awareness by business owners and cities to analyze the best system for their application.  Sustainability, energy efficiency, and maintenance matters are driving designs using the adaptation of newer LED systems.  In addition, the dialog continues on night-time vision and lighting needs, and the best way to achieve optimum visibility while saving energy.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn about general LED technology, and how LEDs affect outdoor luminaire design and performance.
  2. Understand LEDs and their application in outdoor lighting designs.
  3. Evaluate technical information & economic analyses on conventional technologies (HID) compared to LED systems in specific outdoor applications.
  4. Review roadway & area lighting codes such as the MLO, IES & DOE standards, and S/P ratios
  5. Discuss outdoor LED controls technology advances & techniques, such as intelligent environments.
