Grace Lutheran Church
Location: State College, PA
Architect: KTH Architects
Electrical Contractor: Miller Electric
Manufacturer: BK Lighting, Hunza Lighting
Product: AW Series by BK Lighting, NPS Series by Hunza Lighting

Grace Luthern Church, located in State College PA, is an example of mid-20th century architecture. Built in 1964 of local fieldstone and steel, it features an 89-foot spire with dramatically curved sides that define the iconic building. Designed by Harold E. Wagoner of Philadelphia, the church was modeled after the chapel of Notre Dame du Haut by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier and is listed in the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission as an example of religious buildings.

GLC’s goal was to highlight the architecture as well as provide security lighting without obstructing the style of the iconic building.  KTH Architects chose to use outdoor lighting by BK Lighting and Hunza Lighting.  The entryway was lit to provide lighting for safety and security in a tasteful manner.  The 89-foot spire and façade were lit with ground mount units to provide a glow to the building without shadow or glare.  The niches were lit to show off the architectural features of the fieldstone and to highlight the bell tower.  Overall, the lighting created a subtle glow that highlighted the spire and dramatic features without bringing attention to the lighting.
